Caring for your hardware

Much like cars, window & door hardware requires regular care to prolong their life & performance.  Regular cleaning of your windows and doors including the hardware should be done at regular intervals.  Cleaning doesn’t have to be a complex exercise.  Dilute dish washing detergent in warm water, sponge down the hardware and rinse with plenty of clean water to remove any soap residue and dry with a soft cloth every couple of weeks is sufficient.  Never use solvents, chemicals, abrasive cleaners or abrasive cloths such as steel wool, scourers and wire brushes to clean the hardware.

Caring for your hardware is even more important if you live in coastal areas as salt air exposure will cause accumulation of salt crystals leading to corrosion & pitting of the hardware. Dependent on your homes  proximity to the ocean, scheduled maintenance* should be done every 6 months with waterfront properties at least every 3 months. Scheduled maintenance will not only improve the performance and longevity of the hardware it can save you money by detecting problems before they become major repairs.

Did you know that many hardware manufacturers require regular care & maintenance as part of their warranty so it is important to do this to ensure you are covered if you ever need to claim.
